What is Latisse?
Lattisse is a clinically proven, FDA-approved product that was developed to make the lashes grow longer and appear darker and fuller. But before using this prescription solution, a patient should first ask her doctor if this is right for her.
How It Works
The solution, which is applied to the based of the upper eyelashes, can increase the length and number of hairs during their anagen phase where they are continuously growing and are susceptible to changes.
Bimatoprost is Latisse’s active ingredient which was first used by Allergan for its medicated eye drop to treat elevated intraocular pressure. But when patients have noticed that their eyelashes also grew longer and fuller, the company has conducted a study and developed a specific product for growing the lashes.
How to Apply Latisse Solution
To avoid risk of infection and enjoy the full benefits of the product, it is important to carefully follow the manufacturer’s guideline in applying the solution.
- Wash the face thoroughly, remove the contact lenses, and apply facial care products prior to the nightly application of the solution.
- Hold a sterile applicator horizontally and then place one drop of Latisse solution close to its tip but not directly to its end.
- Apply the solution immediately at the base of the upper lashes, specifically where they meet the skin, starting from the inner part of the lash line to its outer area. The product should not be used in the lower eyelid because excess hair may grow which may irritate the eye. Dispose the applicator after one use and get another sterile one to reduce the risk of contamination.
- Using a soft tissue, blot any excess solution outside the eyelid area.
Use only a sterile applicator supplied by the manufacturer in order to prevent contamination and other risks. To further avoid any problem, this device and the tip of the bottle should not be touched by fingers or anything that may harbor bacteria which are known to cause infections.
For patients who are using contact lenses, these should be removed prior to the application and then wait for at least 15 minutes before placing these again in the eyes.
Result of Lattisse Solution
For many patients, they can see a noticeable improvement in as short as four weeks although it usually takes 16 weeks before their lashes achieve full growth. But if they stop using this product, the eyelashes will gradually return to their previous condition.
Possible Side Effects
According to a clinical trial survey, the most common side effects of Latisse solution are itchiness and redness in the eyes which occurred to about 4 percent of patients included in the study. But if the product is discontinued, these symptoms will gradually disappear.
Other risks, although very rare, include dried eyes, increased brow iris pigmentation, and darkening of the eyelid skin which is often reversible.
For individuals with a history of elevated intraocular pressure or those who are using products for this condition, they should only use Lattise solution under the close supervision of their doctors to avoid any risk of complication.
Also, a patient should not attempt to overuse the product (only apply this once a night) as doing so may increase the chance of developing itchiness, irritation, and eye redness.
